From a humble origin as a ‘horseless carriage’ manufacturing industry dating back to 1890s, the global automobile industry has come a long way emerging as a market leader in the manufacturing activity. Today the industry is recognized as the ‘industry of industries’.
The industry reached a global market size of 1.8 trillion in 2009, and contributes 10% of the world’s GDP, employing one out of ten people globally.

The Indian Automotive Industry has grown at a spectacular rate of 17% on an average for the last few years. The industry has now attained a turn over of Rs. 1,65,000 crores and an investment of Rs. 50,000 crores. The industry provides direct and indirect employment to 1.31 crore people in India. According to Ernst & Young, by 2014 India would be among the top five vehicle producers in the world. India is home to many Indian and international automobile companies.

Today, India is well known as a potential emerging automobile market. Subsequently, the jobs in the automobile industry are also rising.
India is the fourth-largest global market in commercial vehicles and the second-largest two-wheeler producer globally. India is also the second largest manufacturer of tractors.

The automobile industry is not restricted only to cars. Scooters, scooterettes, motorcycles, mopeds, mini cars, compact cars, mid size cars, executive cars, premium cars, luxury cars, pickups, light commercial vehicles, intermediate commercial vehicles, multi axles, tractor trailers and such: all together form the automobile industry.

The automotive industry is expected to require an additional 25 million workforce by 2016 in both manufacturing and downstream and upstream activities. Based on the current pattern of employment it is estimated that automotive industry would require at least 7 million trained managers in automotive disciplines. Pune, where DYPDC College is located is a bustling industrial city and an automobile hub. Tata’s NANO was developed in Pune. It is home to world’s second largest two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Auto; the world’s largest forging company, Bharat Forge and many other leading auto manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Daimler Chrysler, General Motors, John Deere, FIAT, etc. Pune is also home to two very prominent automotive research labs, namely Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT). Another prominent research organization Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) is based Ahmednagar, about 120 kms from Pune. Coupled with this, the presence of numerous auto component suppliers and upcoming auto cluster projects, all add to the sobriquet of Pune being the Detroit of India.
