Creating design that will bring in joy, was the mantra shared by our Guest speaker Professor Sooshin Choi the Director of School of Design and Professor of Industrial Design, University of Cincinnati. He enthralled the students with his definition of Design. He went on to explain Logic – make it work, Magic – Make a surprise, Music – Make an Influence and Gut – deliver what you think is right. He further described a designer as a concepter who sees the vision and lets others see it, designer is also a conductor who handles task to team and individuals, a connector who discovers and makes connections to create more value. Professor Choi serves Industrial Designers Society of America as the Education Vice President.

The Cultural Fest
DYPDC this March created news of a different kind by celebrating their first student Fest DETOUR. The fest was resplendent with variety of cultural and sports activities. Making those throws look easy with online games, student faculty matches, skit, mix & match day. The three days of activity brought out the best amongst the DYPDC students giving them another field to excel in. The extravaganza came to an end with the Mr DYPDC contest, dance & dinner.
The DYPDC ‘Raga’
DYPDC had the privilege of hosting the renowned Carnatic Violin exponents ‘The Mysore Brothers’ – Dr. Mysore Manjunath and Mysore Nagaraj. They were accompanied by N. Amrit on Khanjira, BC Manjunath on Pakhavaj and Ramdas Palsule on Tabla. The packed auditorium at DY Patil Knowledge City was mesmerized with the beautiful recital as the artists synchronized Violin with Tabla, Mridangam and Khanjira giving it the perfect jugal bandi. An afternoon of sublime bliss which was not Carnatic or Hindustani but pure music.
DYPDC Students making a mark
This year saw two students, Akhilesh Pawar and Chandan Gupta from DYPDC make it to the final round of the Automobile Design Contest hosted by SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures ) at Bangalore a two day extravaganza on the 23rd & 24th January 2013. The theme being Urban Transport.
Akhilesh Pawar of PG final went on to grab the 3rd prize with his brilliant urban two-wheeler concept “Ecomod”.
Prasanta Kundan Goutam of DYPDC brings in accolades
Prasanta Kundan Goutam, student of final year Post Graduate program in Automobile Design at DYPDC bagged the 1st prize in the transportation design category at “The Battle of Design” – a contest organized by Association of Designers of India. The prize was announced during the Pune Design Festival 2013. His project title was “The T.O.D concept”. The competition was open to design students currently undergoing studies in any of the reputed design institutes all over the country and professionals with less than 2 years of experience.
JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) designer at DYPDC
Ajit Mulay, is a designer working with JLR (Jaguar Land Rover). He visited DYPDC and shared some fundamentally important facts, vis-à-vis his experience. He talked about specific nuances of design which students tend to overlook in the madness of everyday designing. Ajit Mulay brought in the awareness towards the present situation and reminded that if we really aspire to be world leaders, it was high time that we seriously began to develop our very own design language.
Inaugural Trimester end Exhibition
DYPDC organized an exhibition of student work. The exhibition was held during 5th of Dec- till 18th of Dec. This exhibition was inaugurated at the hands of Ms. Alice Powell the worlds fastest GP3 car racing woman. She also addressed the students during her interactive session which gave a lot of insight about the GP3 and F1 racing. DYPDC congratulates all the students and their mentors for putting up a wonderful show.
Design School Director of Northumbria University visits DYPDC
Douglas MacLennan the Design School Director – International Development at Northumbria University, gave a lecture on the 4th of December enlightening the students. He shared the changing trends in design creation in various fields. He explained about the new design elements introduced and brought in our present day knowledge system. In the background of cooperation agreement between DYPDC and Northumbria University, he explained the opportunities available to DYPDC students to study at Northumbria University in UK.
The fastest woman on race track makes a pitstop at DYPDC
DYPDC went racing on the 4th of December 2012 when the fastest women on the race track decided to pay us a visit, we had the honor to welcome Alice Powell, a Formula Series Racing Champion from UK, born in Oxford, England, she learnt to drive at the age of six and started her Karting career two years later. At the age of 16, she became the youngest female driver in Formula Renault UK Championship. Since April 2012, Alice has been driving in the GP 3 series racing for the Team – Status Grand Prix, becoming the first ever female points scorer in the history of the GP3 series.
Taking the students through an intriguing session talking about the realities behind the fastest wheels. The session with students of DYPDC accelerated when she briefed them about the schematics of different Formula series racing categories, working factors and their important aspects. It was interesting to note how she developed this interest in high speed driving and then transformed that into a career.
The interactive one on one with the students that followed the presentation filled the room with thrill and enthusiasm. The questions popped up made for an interesting buzz around Formula Racing Sport and Ms. Powell enjoyed answering each one with pleasure. It was interesting to know that she could never take on rallying and also driving on the normal roads is not her track.
Governor of Antwerp, Belgium visits DYPDC
Her Excellency Mrs.Cathy Berx, The Honourable Governor of Antwerp, Belgium visited DY Patil Knowledge City Campus on the 3rd of November 2012, She landed at the campus helipad at 9.45 am and was accorded a traditional Maharastrian welcome of Dhol, Lezim etc. During this visit she inaugurated the O.P.D at the Dental School and was then taken for a guided tour of the campus. As part of this visit she also visited the DYPDC facilities and was very impressed with the kind of program being offered as well as the infrastructure being provided to the Automobile design students of DYPDC. She left for D.Y. Patil Mumbai campus after lunch. As part of this high profile visit the campus was covered under strict security vigil provided by the various government enforcement agencies.
